For the two years Iโd been quietly crushing on him, Iโd been taking secret photos and videos of him from the unnoticed corners of campus.
Iโd even posted a few shots of his back on a burner account, shyly confessing my little secret crush.
This was the first time I couldnโt hold back and posted a clip that actually showed his faceโand somehow it went viral.
It blew up out of nowhere.
Funny enough, that night was my best friendโs birthday and Iโd drunk too much. I slept until noon the next day and didnโt check any notifications.
When I finally woke up, showered, and ate, I realized something was wrongโmy notifications were blowing up.
Every comment and DM was about him.
Hungover reflexes make you slow to react; I stared at my phone for a long time before it hit me: Ethan Shaw had gone viral.
Ethan Shawโthe boy Iโd been crushing on for two years. Same department, different class, the unanimously acknowledged department heartthrob.
The video was one Iโd secretly recorded two days earlier. Among the boys shooting hoops, Ethan was the most noticeable.
Tall, long-legged, paler than the other guys but not at all delicate-looking. At 6’2" he stood out: short, messy black hair, clean, striking features.
In the clip, Ethan dribbled past a defender and drove to the basket, finishing with a crisp, decisive layup.
As everyone cheered, he turned toward me and looked straight into my camera for a moment.
That slightly grainy clip blew up like wildfire.
The most surprising thing was the top comment: "Trust me, from that look in his eyes, this guy definitely likes you."
That comment had 23k likesโ2k more than the comment praising Ethan.
Even knowing it was unrealistic, I was still thrilled.
Who wouldnโt be happy to hear that the person youโre secretly in love with might like you back?
I thought the matter would end there. But at 8 p.m., while I was cuddled up watching a K-drama, my phone vibratedโsomeone sent a WeChat friend request.
I wasnโt going to accept, but when I read the attached note I froze.
I hurriedly opened the request. It said, plain and clear: Hi, Iโm Ethan Shaw.
Ethan?
Ethan!
I sat there stunned for a long moment, then, trembling, hit acceptโonly to hesitate about what contact name to save him under.
What should I write?
Future boyfriend?
No, too embarrassing.
Dream guy?
Not okay eitherโwhat if someone saw it? It would clash with my usual "aloof" persona.
After a long internal debate I settled on a plain contact name: “Ethan Shaw.”
No sooner had I saved it than his message came through.
"I saw the video."
Short and directโvery Ethan.
My heart skipped.
I couldnโt read his tone at first. Was he angry? Calling me out? Orโฆ like in the dramas, did he secretly like me too and this would turn into a mutual crush? I imagined endless possibilitiesโexcept one.
He messaged: “Miss Claire, Iโll pay you to promote me. Can you film more videos of me?”
"โฆโฆ"
Of all the outcomes, I hadnโt expected him to want me as his videographer.
After a long silence, I replied: โActually, itโs Miss Bennett.โ
"โฆSorry. So, could you film a few more videos for me?"
I sat on the top bunk with the curtain closed, hands twisting, leaning against a pillow, both nervous and helpless.
The idea of openly filming the boy I secretly liked made my stomach knot. But learning heโd seen my covert footage and knowing he now knew about my crush feltโฆdeflating.
Looks like my feelings were unrequited.
I hesitated then typed a single "Okay." Thinking it sounded too eager, I added a trailing "I guess."
Okay, that made me sound less forward, right?
While waiting for Ethan to reply I scrolled through his Moments and noticed something unusual.
It looked like Ethan liked Hazel Park.
Hazelโmy classmate, roommate, and the only true best friend I had at Waverly University.
Because I kept an aloof stance, most classmates didnโt get close to meโexcept Hazel. She was the perfect counterpoint to me.
Iโm tall and thin; sheโs short with a cute baby-face chubbiness. Iโm laconic; sheโs a chatterbox who could drag me into conversations for hours.
Everyone thought we were an odd pair but the best of friends.
On Ethanโs Moments there was a sunset photo with the caption: I have a crush on a girl whoโs shockingly beautiful.
The sunset wasnโt important. What mattered was Hazelโs half-face showing in the lower left corner of the photo.
I stared at the screen for a long time.
Then my phone buzzed.
Ethan messaged: "Why have you never brought me water?"
??
The topic shift was so abrupt I was momentarily speechless.
After a few seconds I typed slowly: "Too many people bring you water."
He replied almost instantly: “I haven’t drunk any of it.”
His reply sounded almost like a promise, or an explanation. I stared at that brief message and felt my heart speed up.
Then another message: "Tomorrow night, come bring me water at the basketball court."
I stared at that sentence for a long while, unable to type, when Ethan followed up: "Bring your roommate with you."
I froze.
A bucket of cold water dumped over me. I admit I look aloof on the outside but inside Iโm a mess of feelings.
After going back and forth in my head I finally answered slowly. I typed a long message, then deleted it, and left a cool three-word reply: "Okay. Good night."
The conversation ended there.
But I scrolled through Ethanโs Moments again, combing for clues. From what heโd posted, it was obvious he had someone he liked.
And I became almost certain it was Hazel.
In one comment thread a mutual friend asked what kind of girl he liked. He replied in three words: "Cute and sweet."
Cute and sweet?
That described Hazel perfectly.
A little baby fat, round dark eyes, fair skin, a naturally sweet, high-pitched voice, and a daily Lolita-inspired wardrobeโno one would deny that “cute” fit Hazel.
I felt crushed. If Ethan liked that type, I had almost no chance.
My grand secret crush felt over before it had even begun.
Lost in thought with my phone, the dorm door suddenly openedโHazel bounced back in.
Sheโd been on a date todayโof course, with her own crush.
Her crush was Liam Carter from the basketball teamโnot super handsome but the sunny, easy-going type.
Iโd met him a few times; his smile showed a neat row of white teeth and he looked good next to Hazel.
I yanked back my curtain and propped myself on the bed to ask: "Hazel, how was the date?"
She held a bubble tea, face glowing. "It went so well! Liam said Iโm actually pretty greatโhe likes me a lot."
She was genuinely happy. Hazel never hid her feelings; joy lifts her whole face and sadness crumples it.
I hesitated, then quietly asked while the room was empty: “Hazelโฆif Ethan liked you, would you be interested?”
She took a sip, choked on the drink, then stared at me in shock. "Ethan? Me?"
I nodded.
"No way!"
She waved her hands. "Ethan wouldnโt notice someone like meโhe’s a department heartthrob. And that pretty boy idol face? Not my type."
I believed her. Part of me felt relieved, part of me felt sorryโsorry for Ethan, that such a great guy might like someone whoโd never like him back.
I spent the whole evening wrapped in that feeling.
Because I was thinking about tomorrow nightโs arrangement, I was distracted all through class. Finally, in the afternoon, after grabbing a rice noodle bowl for the dorm with Hazel, I washed up and put on makeup.
Like Hazel always told me: if you want love, you have to go after it.
Ethan liked cute girls, but if I kept showing up around him, what if he saw me differently someday?
Once I was ready, Hazel finished eating and came over with napkins in one hand and a trash bag with broth in the other. She stopped short when she saw me, then ran over, eyes sparkling.
She sized me up and exclaimed, "Claire Bennett, I always knew you were pretty, but wowโyou look amazing with makeup!"
I smiled but didnโt respond.
Iโd always known I was above average-looking and had been complimented a lot. That never stopped me from being painfully shy around the person I liked.
When I see him around campus I tend to avoid him. Thatโs what crushes doโmake you nervous, shy, and a little insecure.
Hazel looped her arm through mine and dragged me to the basketball court. On the way she bought two bottles of ice water.
She handed me one with a grin. "Liamโs here today. You deliver water to your Ethan, Iโll deliver to mine."
I smiled, still nervous. "Okay."
We arrived at the perfect time. The court was already crowded, and I spotted Ethan at once.
They hadnโt started playing yet. He stood under the hoop, scanning the crowd.
I froze.
When his gaze swung my way, I tugged nervously at my skirt. I rarely wore skirts; I usually stuck to white T-shirts and shorts.
Across the crowd our eyes met.
Then he suddenly smiled and waved in my direction.
I was a little flattered and waved back at him in a hurry. After I lowered my hand I couldnโt help scolding myself insideโmy wave probably looked totally sillyโฆ Ethan and I hadnโt exchanged a single word the whole time, while Hazelโs crush walked over holding a basketball.
โHazel, whoโs this?โ Liam glanced at me, then asked Hazel.
Hazel enthusiastically introduced, โThis is Claire Bennett, my roommateโsheโs the famous beauty in our class!โ
Liamโs gaze fell on me, and he smiled, stepping forward and offering his hand in a rather proper way. โHi, Iโm Liam Carter.โ
His move caught me off guard for a few seconds. I hurriedly reached out and shook his hand. โHi.โ
I actually wanted to tell him a few thingsโlike to be nice to Hazelโbut Iโm not the type to talk up a storm with strangers. I opened my mouth, and in the end nothing came out.
Liam stood with us and chatted with Hazel for a few minutes more. I, meanwhile, instinctively looked up, scanning the crowd for Ethan.
When I finally saw him, he happened to be looking our way, his gaze focused.
My stomach dipped; I realized instantlyโEthan was probably jealous.
Seeing Hazel and Liam laughing together made him feel bad.
Luckily, Liam didnโt lingerโhe soon went back to play.
Hazel hooked her arm through mine at the sideline and loudly cheered Liam on.
I have to say, Ethan as an amateur could really hold his own against guys like Liam from the basketball team.
Despite tight defense, he still sank a beautiful three-pointer.
When the ball went in, the gym exploded in cheers. I kept my composure outwardly, but inside my heart was booming.
I watched that figure on the court quietly. Even if Ethan didnโt like me back, I still thought:
Look how amazing the boy I like is.
During halftime, Ethan came straight over to us.
I got nervous. I was hesitating whether to hand him some water when Liam suddenly came backโand ignored the water Hazel held out. Instead, Liam took the bottle from my hand.
I froze. Hazel froze. Even Ethan, whoโd just walked up to us, was stunned.
Only Liam seemed calm.
He casually took the bottle from me, twisted the cap open, and took a swig. Then he flashed a grin he clearly thought was charming and waved the bottle at me. โThanks!โ
I frowned and didnโt bother to be polite. I called him out: โDonโt thank meโthis water wasnโt for you.โ
Liamโs โsunnyโ smile froze. He looked a little embarrassed.
I rolled my eyes at him and ignored the sudden change in his face.
Hazel had held out her water and heโd ignored her. He hadnโt worried about embarrassing her, had he?
The Man Who Found Me Through a Video
Ethan stepped up then.
Snapping out of my shock, I glanced at him. I looked calm, but my heart was racing.
Would he misunderstand?
I wanted to explain, but I didnโt know how to start.
Hazel nudged me with her elbow and quietly handed the water sheโd been holding to me.
I took it, my mind blank. Usually Iโm quick-witted, but around Ethan my brain always short-circuited.
Then Hazel shoved me hard on the back. I lost my balance and lunged forward, falling right into Ethan.
He reacted fast and grabbed my arm to steady me.
Heโd just been playing; his palm was slightly sweaty, but I didnโt mind at all.
With a face like Ethanโs, he could sit on the ground picking at his feet and Iโd still think he looked good.
Yep. Iโm a complete sucker for a handsome face.
Once I was steady, Ethan politely withdrew his hand. I was nervous and instinctively glanced at Hazelโonly to lock eyes with her look of exasperated disbelief.
She made a โgo onโ gesture and immediately turned her head away.
I bit my lip and looked back at Ethan.
Girls usually bring water to boys shyly, voice soft as water. I stuck to my cool, aloof persona, threw the bottle at Ethan, and in my characteristically laconic way said, โHere.โ
Behind me I could almost hear Hazelโs silent comment about how ridiculous this pursuit of a crush looked.
The bottle sailed in a nice arc and landed squarely in Ethanโs hands.
He wasnโt surprisedโhe opened it, took a drink, and then smiled at me. โThanks.โ
I smiled back and didnโt say anything.
The next game was about to start. Ethan handed the bottle back.
I blinked, confused. Wait, he already drank itโwhy return it?
When I didnโt take it, Ethan laughed. โHold it for me. After the game Iโll buy you guys dinner.โ
I snapped to and obediently took the bottle, not missing the word: โyou guys,โ not โyou.โ
Before I could even decide whether to accept, Ethan was called away by his friends.
Halfway down the court he turned, smiled at me, and said, โMiss Claire, remember to record me, okay?โ
I blinked in surprise and automatically took out my phone.
But the video turned out tougher to shoot than I thought. In the second half, Ethan and Liam actually butted heads.
It wasnโt a formal matchโjust a casual scrimmageโbut they went at each other like sworn enemies.
Everyone else was baffled; I knew exactly whyโthis was a fight fueled by jealousy.
Liam probably liked me and resented that Iโd just given Ethan water. So he targeted Ethan the whole half.
Ethan wouldnโt give in either. I guessed he had seen Liam ignore Hazelโs water and wanted to stand up for the girl he secretly liked.
I sighed and told Hazel what I figured. She stared at me, shocked, like sheโd been looking at a fool.
As expected, Hazel said bluntly, โClaire, are you stupid or what?โ
I looked down at her, puzzled.
She reached up and poked my forehead. โCanโt you see? Ethan likes you.โ
Ethan likes me?
I was silent for a long moment, then murmured, โI thought he liked you.โ
Hazel didnโt argue further. She caught the hand holding my phone and raised it toward Ethan. โForget it. Getting you to catch on is hopeless. Just film him.โ
At her reminder I remembered the real taskโrecording Ethan.
Whenever I filmed him I got especially serious. My eyes and the camera were totally on him, leaving no attention for anyone else.
While I filmed I kept thinking: I should get a real camera.
Ethan is too prettyโshooting him on a phone almost felt disrespectful.
So we stayed on the sideline. I watched Ethan. Hazel watched Liam. And I kept filming.
Maybe it was my imagination, but Ethan seemed to be looking at me a lot.
Every time he scored or paused, heโd turn his head and scan the crowdโthen his eyes would land on me, only to look away quickly.
It was so quick I couldnโt tell if he meant to seek me out or if our eyes just happened to meet.
Dusk fell.
Just as I was getting too restless to sit still, Ethan and his friends finished.
After talking with the guys, Ethan walked over to us.
I stayed put on the bleacher with Hazel, my heart pounding.
Ethan crouched in front of me and naturally took the water from my hand. He tipped his head back and drank half the bottle in one go.
When he tightened the cap, a drop of water hung at the corner of his mouth.
Without thinking I reached up and, with my fingertip, wiped it away.
The air hung frozen.
Ethanโs movements seemed to stiffen for a moment. I blinked, then quickly withdrew my hand.
So embarrassing.
Sometimes I actually admire myself. No matter how mortified I feel, I can keep a straight face.
Like right thenโI wanted the ground to swallow me up, but I still managed to say casually, โThere was a drop of water. I just wiped it off.โ
Ethan gave a small, awkward smile. โThanks.โ
Awkwardness lingered in the air. Thankfully, Hazel jumped in to break it. โHey, do you want to watch the footage Claire took of you?โ
Ethan nodded, smiling. โSure.โ
Relieved, I pulled up the video Iโd just shot.
He watched intently, leaning over my shoulder, focused on my screen.
Hazel winked at me and egged him on: โSee? Claire makes you look way hotter than you do in real life. Love is blind, huh?โ
Hazel meant to fan the flames, but her words accidentally snapped something into focus for me.
It had been a whole day since Ethan added me on WeChat, and I finally realized something: How did he know those videos were mine?
Weird. That account was a throwawayโonly secretly filmed clips of Ethanโs back, nothing that revealed who I was.
Yesterday when he added me, Iโd assumed it was because the videos had blown up and somehow everyone found out I liked him. But nobody actually knew the account belonged to me.
So how did Ethan figure it out?
I was mulling it over when my phone buzzed. A message popped up on my screen, where all three of us could see it: โClaire, did you sleep with that Shaw boy yet? /evil grin/โ
Silence.
Absolute silence.
The message came from my big-mouthed cousin Maya. Weโd been close since we were kids; I never pretended around her and told her everything.
For a moment I even wondered if sheโd planted a tracker on meโhow else could she send that message so fast?
I flushed, stole a quick glance at Ethan.
He looked awkward too, eyes darting away, then he cleared his throat to cover the embarrassment.
I inhaled, hesitating how to explain, but when I opened my mouth it came out flat as ever. โSheโs lying.โ
โMm-hmm.โ
Ethan nodded and didnโt press it.
For a second I felt like the husband caught cheating, trying to act nonchalant while explaining to his wife, and Ethan was the aggrieved little spouse.
Luckily the notification vanished quickly and I straightened up, finally breathing out.
Then I looked up and saw someone in the crowdโmy beloved cousin, Maya.
She was standing at the edge of the gym, laughing way too happily at me. When she saw me look her way she even waved her phone at me.
โDamn it!โ
I couldnโt hold it and swore out loud.
Maybe she read my lips because Maya laughed harder, then wiggled her hips as she walked away.
Before she left she reached back and made a little thumbs-up cheer at me.
Real classy.
I tore my gaze away and found Ethan watching me with a puzzled look. He glanced toward where Maya had gone. โWhat was that?โ
โNothing.โ
I lied, shrugging. โI thought I saw a big black dog run byโgot startled.โ
Maya was wearing a pure black dress, by the way.
โA big black dog?โ
Ethan looked confused but didnโt pry.
Thank goodness Hazel bailed us out at just the right moment. She wiped sweat from her forehead and fanned herself with her hand. โIโm kinda hungry. Want to grab a late-night bite?โ
She shot me a look.
I pressed my lips together, feeling awkward; the word โyesโ was stuck in my throat.
Ethan beat me to it. โSure.โ
He turned to me, and maybe it was just me, but his eyes seemed softer than usual. โWhat do you want to eat?โ
We were still practically shoulder to shoulder. That close, I got nervous again, so I mumbled, โBarbecue.โ
Ethan smiled. โI know a place near school thatโs good. Come on, Iโll take you.โ
No sooner had he said that than Hazelโs phone rang at the most convenient time. She answered with an over-the-top expression: โWhat? Youโre in the hospital? Where are you? Iโm coming!โ
She hung up, glanced at me, then said to Ethan, โMy friendโs in the hospital. Iโll go see them.โ
โGo on, you two eat!โ
She didnโt wait for an answerโshe just ran off.
I watched Hazel leave, exasperated. Could she at least have kept the alarm screen out of sight while pretending it was a phone call?
In the blink of an eye it was just Ethan and me.
He looked at me and asked softly, โSoโshall we go eat?โ
Maybe it was the haze of my crush, but when he looked down at me I always felt like something sparkled behind his dark eyes.
I couldnโt hold his gaze.
โOkay,โ I said.
Thatโs how we ended up shoulder to shoulder at Harperโs BBQ outside the campus gates.
Ethan seemed like a regular; he was friendly with Mrs. Harper and had already ordered a pile of special dishes while I was zoning out.
When he looked ready to keep ordering, I cut him off. โEnough! Weโll waste it if we canโt eat it.โ
Ethan didnโt argue. Mrs. Harper, jotting things down, chuckled and gave me a squinting smile.
After ordering, we sat facing each other. Neither of us spoke first.
My palms were sweaty, but I couldnโt have us sit in silence forever. I sipped tea to buy courage and forced myself to ask, โHow did you know… those videos were mine?โ
Ethan hesitated, then took out his phone, opened a page, and held the screen out to me.
He pressed his lips together and spoke low: โThis is mine.โ
I followed the direction of his hand and froze.
It was him.
How was it him?
Of the three followers on my alt account, two were obviously bots. The one real follower was Ethanโor rather, his alt account.
Iโd already scrolled that account before; it had only two landscape videos that suggested the same city but offered no personal info you could trace.
I had never in a million years guessed that the follower whoโd watched me for months was Ethan.
Which meant heโd seen all those videos.
I was equal parts shocked, thrilled, and mortified and didnโt know what to say.
The more we talked the clearer it became that Ethan was also a closed book, just like me.
And Hazel had been rightโhe seemed to like me too.
Heโd shown me his main account; it didnโt have many posts, but the avatar and ID looked familiar.
I fumbled for my phone and pulled up the video that had made Ethan blow up. I opened the comments. The top reply was still there, the one everyone had loved: โTrust me, from his eyes he definitely likes you.โ
Black avatar, ID โCโโthat was Ethan.
Slow as I could be sometimes, this should have been obvious. Heart pounding, fingertips trembling, I pushed my phone toward him and pointed at the comment. โIs this you?โ
He glanced, then smiled and nodded. โYep. No doubt.โ
I took a deep breath to steady my racing heart and stared at him.
โShould I believe that comment?โ
Ethan kept smiling, but the nervous flicker in him and the way his hands fiddled gave him away.
He rubbed his nose with his fingertip and said slowly, โYou should.โ
I never imagined I'd find myself in an overused romance trope in real life.
Dusk settled. Under the warm yellow lights Ethan looked at me, gentle and soft.
โTrust meโhe really likes you,โ he said.
I stared, dazed. It all felt unreal, like something out of a drama or a sweet little novella.
Ethan kept looking at me, utterly composedโexcept I noticed his ears were a little pink.
When our eyes met he chuckled softly. โNow itโs my turn to ask.โ
My stomach flipped. I nodded.
He put his hands together, serious and steady, eyes fixed on me. โThe videos you postedโsaying you like meโare they true?โ
Oh my God.
I hadnโt expected him to be so direct. I actually felt shy admitting it.
After a long pause I steeled myself and nodded. โYes.โ
Ethan laughed like someone relieved. Across the table he took my hand; it was warm. He sighed and said in a low voice, โIโve been waiting for this day.โ
I couldnโt help but mutter, โThat line shouldโve been mine to say.โ
Ethan had seen those videosโhe knew Iโd liked him for a long time.
But he shook his head. โI fell for you first.โ
โNo way!โ
โItโs true.โ
He looked at me, earnest and certain. โThe day freshman orientation started, I had designs on you.โ
โDesigns,โ I echoed, surprised heโd use such a phrase.
Then Ethan told me a version of the story Iโd never known.
On move-in day heโd finished registration and set up his dorm, then wandered around campus alone. In a corner of the grounds heโd seen a girlโtall, slim, very prettyโmuttering to herself at a wall, saying strange little phrases like, โMiss Claire, try to talk to your roommates more,โ โOffer to share your snacks,โ โKeep the noise down in the mornings and evenings so you donโt disturb anyone.โ
It sounded like she was reciting dorm rules. Heโd thought she was odd but adorable. He was smoking behind a tree and didnโt want to startle her, so he watched until she left.
After that, she left a deep impression on him.
He started noticing her in crowds, following her with his eyes, and eventually he fell for her.
That tall, awkwardly cute girl was me.
Heโd even remembered the exact lines Iโd muttered back then, which made me mortified. But they were undeniably mine.
Iโve always been a bit differentโpeople sum me up with one word: cold. Or, to be more precise: aloof.
In high school classmates called me an ice princess. It wasnโt trauma, just my personality. I was shy about expressing myself, habitually played it cool, and that made me terse to the point of rudeness.
People then pulled away, which made me withdraw more. By the time college started, my nervousness had me talking to myself in a corner before going into the dormโpep talks, reminders, all that. I never imagined somebody was watching that moment and keeping it in their memory.
And of all people, it was the one who would be my secret crush for the next two years.
So melodramatic.
After he finished the origin story, Ethan and I stared at each other, then I remembered a question Iโd been dying to ask. โSoโwhy didnโt you confess?โ
Ethan answered honestly. โYou were too cold. I didnโt dare.โ
I stared, incredulous. The boy in front of meโthe one who now looked like a guilty little husbandโwas also the campus heartthrob, constantly in the spotlight.
โYou knew I liked you.โ
I blurted it out before I could stop myself.
He froze for two seconds, then suddenly smiled and said softly, "But I only found out a few months ago that you liked me too."
“About three months ago,” Ethan explained. “One time I noticed you seemed to be filming me. It was a quiet dayโonly you were holding up a phone recording.
โLater, when I got back to the dorm, I happened to scroll past a video of myself playing basketball.โ
“I made a little private account to follow you quietly,” he admitted. “Because I wasn’t sure, I wanted to observe, to make sure the person who said they liked me was actually you.”
I listened quietly, then asked the last question: "How did you know my WeChat?"
Ethan laughed. โDidnโt you know youโre pretty well-known too?โ
I licked my lips and didn't answer.
I mostly knew.
Ethan smiled and rubbed the tip of his nose. โActually, I got your WeChat ages ago. I just never dared add you.โ
He hadnโt dared add me.
I couldn't help but laughโturns out even our campus heartthrob could be such a coward when it came to feelings.
With all the misunderstandings cleared up, Mrs. Harper happened to come by carrying a tray of skewers.
For some reason, seeing our hands intertwined, she got particularly delighted and piled more food on our table.
Seafood, grilled meats, specialty dishesโwhether we'd ordered them or not, she brought them all over.
I was stunned, untilโEthan called out to her, "Mom."
Mrs. Harper answered, beaming, looked me over, and then sat beside me, holding my hand and examining me head to toe.
"This girl is great, she looks just like I did when I was young. I like her."
Ethan promptly burst her bubble. โMom, Iโve seen your old photos. Youโd put on some weight back thenโaround 190 pounds, maybe 200.โ
"Shut up!"
Mrs. Harper scolded him, laughed, held my hand a bit longer, told me to eat more, and went back to tending the business.
But before I could relax, someone sat down across from us.
I looked up and my head actually hurt.
It was my cousin.
I seriously wondered if she had put a tracker on me.
She settled in, winked at me, then offered Ethan her hand. โHi, Iโm Claireโs cousin.โ
Ethan shook her hand but only touched fingertips in a polite, gentlemanly way and pulled back quickly.
My cousin goes to the same school, a year ahead of us. She's a social butterfly; it wasn't long before she was chatting with Ethan.
Ethan didn't stand a chance.
In just a few exchanges, my cousin had uncovered his relationship history, family backgroundโeverything.
She winked at me, clearly pleased.
I couldn't take it any longer and went to the bathroom.
When I came back, the atmosphere had shifted; my cousin was quietly staring at her phone like nothing was wrong.
But from years of knowing her, that kind of calm always meant trouble.
Ethan looked off too, like something was up.
Before I could ask, my cousin stood up. โIโve got to run. You two enjoy your food.โ
Then, not bothering with niceties, she asked the server for two plastic bags and packed up ten skewers of grilled tendons.
Carrying her skewers, she hurried off.
What a roller-coaster night.
I glanced at Ethan and asked cautiously, "What did she say to you?"
He just smiled and didn't answer.
Only on the walk back to Maple Hall, after I pressed him, did he finally tell me what had happenedโwhile I was in the bathroom, my dear cousin had used our wildly indecent chat logs as leverage to get Ethan to give her the WeChat of his handsome roommate.
I knew who Ethan's roommate was; my cousin had been drooling over him for agesโlong legs, abs, looks a little like Lee Min-ho.
At my insistence, Ethan handed his phone over and scrolled to the messages my cousin had just sent him.
"โฆ"
They were exactly as indecent as she'd been threatening.
Pages of conversation, basically us talking about Ethan and his roommate.
For example: my cousin asked if I thought I could win him over, and I answered without hesitation: “I’ll sleep with him sooner or later!”
So Ethan was fully aware that I had been openly salivating over his body and looks.
I forced myself to read through the messages my cousin had sent, my brow pounding, and thenโtrying to play it coolโI handed the phone back and said, "I was joking."
Ethan smiled.
Under the streetlights, he took my hand gently, eyes full of amusement. "Got it."
I said, "Mm."
Then I remembered something else.
I pulled up Ethan's Moments and pointed at a photo where only a small slice of Hazel's face showed. "At first I thought you liked Hazel."
Ethan flinched, surprised. “I swear, I meant this person.”
He tapped the screen, and the image he highlighted was only a silhouette, backlit and vague.
But I recognized it instantlyโit's me.
My heart softened. Turns out even his social feed was dotted with traces of his liking me.
We walked hand in hand toward Maple Hall.
Under one streetlight, Ethan suddenly stopped and looked at me.
The light haloed his hair and brow in a warm yellow glow.
He was a little taller than me; when he looked down, his eyes dropped slightly.
I thought he was going to say something ordinary, but what he asked nearly stopped me.
"Can I kiss you?"
He asked like it was permission. Before I could reply, he kissed me.
He hadnโt chosen a dark, secluded corner. He leaned down and kissed me right there on the busy walkway, beneath a streetlight, with students passing by.
Somehow before the kiss he'd popped a strawberry candy into his mouth; our first kiss tasted like strawberries.
Sweet. Almost too sweet.
The day after Ethan and I got together, we went viral.
Ethan recorded his own side of the story in a video where he carefully laid out all the bits and pieces of our pastโour mutual crushes, and everything that happened last night.
At the end of the video was the photo someone had taken of us kissing under the streetlightโshot at the perfect angle. We had our eyes closed; the kiss was sincere and reverent, the warm light lending it softness.
Unsurprisingly, the video blew up.
The comments were full of dramatic groans and praise. Single viewers joked that they were dying of jealousy; others swooned, โWhat a fairy-tale love!โ
There were some negative voices claiming it was staged, a publicity stunt.
We didn't care.
After we read the comments together, Ethan cupped my face and said quietly, "I don't care if it goes viral or not. I just want everyone to know this isn't a one-sided crush. While you liked me, I was secretly liking you too."
He squeezed my hand; he spoke calmly, but his ears were pink.
He leaned in, kissed my lips, winked, and his eyes glittered: "I want everyone to knowโ"
โThis love goes both ways.โ
