The Night I Found Him With Her

I was in the house of the guy Iโ€™d been secretly crushing on when I walked in on a girl wrapped in a towel.

She must have just stepped out of the showerโ€”her hair still dripping, cheeks flushed a soft pink.

The master bedroom door stood ajar, the room beyond washed in a suggestive half-dark.

It was hard not to let my mind run wild imagining what had happened between them.

I even caught, faintly in the air, the salty tang of bodily fluids.

Ethan, oh Ethan. The boy Iโ€™d loved for ten years slept with another girl today.

A decade of secret longingโ€”at this moment, I finally gave up.

1. Ethan got into a car accident. His right leg was fractured; heโ€™d be bedridden for at least a month.

He couldnโ€™t take care of himself and would need help.

After Mom nagged me again and again, I brought a pot of congee to the hospital.

Ethan really was wealthyโ€”he had a single room.

I couldnโ€™t help but sigh.

He was reading. When he heard me, he looked up and met my eyes.

Not long ago Iโ€™d sworn I wouldnโ€™t bother him anymore; yet here I was, showing up at his door barely two days later. I stood awkwardly in the doorway.

Iโ€™d said the same things so many times over the years that Ethan had become immune to my โ€œresolves.โ€ His attitude had shifted from annoyed coldness to complete indifference. That day, after I spoke, I even caught a flash of mocking disdain in his eyes.

Actually, โ€œso many timesโ€ was an exaggerationโ€”really, only three times.

Every failed attempt to walk away only convinced him that I couldnโ€™t live without him.

He didnโ€™t know that every time I tried, I was sincerely crushed. My disappointment and hurt were real. My desire to give up was real.

This time it felt different. I think I wasnโ€™t as in love anymore.

I hadnโ€™t wanted to come.

But my mom said, โ€œYouโ€™re free during the day. You can help look after Little Ethan. Youโ€™ve been neighbors for yearsโ€”heโ€™s like your brother. The kids should watch out for each other.โ€ Before I could refuse, Ethanโ€™s mom called and, sounding grateful, asked if I could look after her son.

I said, โ€œBut Ethan has a girlfriend.โ€ โ€œA girlfriend? Ethan has a girlfriend?โ€ Her voice was shocked.

Minutes later Mom called again. โ€œYour aunt checkedโ€”Ethan said he doesnโ€™t have a girlfriend. You must be mistaken.โ€ โ€ฆHeโ€™s just not ready to tell you.

I poured the seafood congee from the thermos; the room filled with a savory aroma.

I handed him a bowl. He glanced at me and took it without comment.

After one spoonful he frowned. โ€œDid you buy this?โ€ I nodded and sat down. โ€œI was in a rushโ€”didnโ€™t have time to cook.โ€ Ethan pursed his lips.

โ€œJust eat some for now. Iโ€™ll make you a proper meal next time.โ€ Ethan didnโ€™t like restaurant foodโ€”he thought it was unclean, and he disliked heavy seasonings.

Seafood congee took effort: four or five ingredients, deveining shrimp, all that. If it were the old days, I mightโ€™ve started cooking an hour or two early to have it ready.

Soon, Chloe Park arrived.

The heat had rouged her cheeks; she came in breathless, smiling, โ€œEthan, I brought you congeeโ€”I made it myself.โ€ I noticed she wore a tight denim skirt.

What made me care so much was the first time Iโ€™d seen them: Ethan had smiled at her, appreciating, โ€œYou look good in skirts.โ€ Contrast that with the many times Iโ€™d worn a skirt and other guys stared at my legs while Ethan scrunched his brow and asked, โ€œWhy would you wear something like that?โ€ Because of that comment Iโ€™d hardly worn skirts since.

I racked my brain wondering what kind of girl got that approving โ€œyou look goodโ€ from Ethan.

Conclusion: Chloe was thin, with a great waist-to-hip ratio and long straight dark hair. Any skirt on her would read as graceful.

So I dieted hardโ€”skin sallow from hunger, listlessโ€”until I dropped under 95 pounds.

Maya scolded me in despair: โ€œYouโ€™re paler, slimmer waist, perkier chest, a beautiful swan neckโ€”no matter what, if a man doesnโ€™t like you, he just doesnโ€™t. Why canโ€™t you see that?โ€

โ€œI know,โ€ I told her, โ€œbut I canโ€™t help it.โ€

The skirt Chloe wore now looked a lot like the one Ethan had criticized me for: short, clinging to the hip line.

When I noticed Chloeโ€™s outfit, Ethanโ€™s expression didnโ€™t change at all.

So it wasnโ€™t the skirt. It was the person.

โ€œThanks, but I already ate.โ€ Ethan put his bowl down.

โ€œOh.โ€ Chloe looked a little disappointed.

I took the thermos. โ€œNo worriesโ€”put it in the fridge and heat it up at night.โ€ That way I wouldnโ€™t need to cook.

I opened the lid and breathed in, secretly pleased.

Ethan glanced at me.

They chatted while I sat with my head down on my phone.

Ethan was clearly more attentive to Chloeโ€”he even handed her a blanket to cover her legs.

I rested my head on the table and, without realizing it, fell asleep.

2. I always knew Ethan didnโ€™t like me.

Weโ€™d known each other too long. My short buzz-cut and dirty tank-top, running around sun-darkened as a kidโ€”those images stuck in his mind.

Even through middle school when I was a tomboy, to him I was that skinny neighborhood kid; my gender barely registered.

Even after I grew my hair out in high school and got compliments on my figure, his impression never changed.

The latest blow came when I overheard him joking to Chloe about me: offhand, โ€œYaoโ€”people know not to go for whatโ€™s nearby.โ€ Even so, Iโ€™d still stand at his door with a bowl of breakfast, try to compose myself, and pretend everything was normal.

I was afraid that if I called him out, our last fragile ties would snap.

Pathetic. I even found myself laughing at how low Iโ€™d stooped.

A few days earlier, I bumped into Chloe wrapped in only a towel in Ethanโ€™s room.

She had just come out of the bathroom, hair still dripping, shoulders bare and smooth. Without makeup she looked even more innocent.

We stared at each other; she was shocked, squeaked briefly, and hid behind Ethan.

The master bedroom door was open; inside the light was dim and intimate.

I smelled a faint metallic tang in the air.

Ethan, oh Ethanโ€”my crush for ten yearsโ€”was in bed with another girl today.

Although she seemed flustered, we both knew who was worse off. It was me.

I kept my composure and handed over my phone. โ€œAunt May couldnโ€™t reach you and got worriedโ€”she called me.โ€ Ethan glanced at me, expression flat, took the phone and walked away. โ€œHey, Mom. Iโ€™m here.โ€ He didnโ€™t care about what I thought.

I lowered my eyes so I wouldnโ€™t have to meet Chloeโ€™s gaze.

This girl had been coming to Ethanโ€™s house every morning for a whole month and would only leave around six or seven each evening. Sometimes sheโ€™d run into me and still smile hello.

Before, he never let girls come and go from his houseโ€”except me. Now even that exception was gone.

Jealousy nagged me. Her smile seemed threaded with irony and showiness.

Shouldnโ€™t I be relieved that she hadnโ€™t stayed the night? I convinced myself of thatโ€”until I got slapped in the face.

After Mom finished talking on the phone, Ethan handed it back and explained, โ€œI didnโ€™t notice my phone turned off.โ€ โ€œOkay.โ€ I kept my face neutral. โ€œIโ€™ll go.โ€

Ethan stared at me a long moment, his expression unreadable. โ€œFine.โ€ I turned, but Chloe called after me.

A little embarrassed, she said, โ€œI drank too much last nightโ€”my clothes smell. Can I borrow something of yours?โ€ She tilted her mouth into a smile. โ€œI think our sizes are similar.โ€ I paused then turned back with a small smile. โ€œSure.โ€ Later I sat in the dim room for a long time. I donโ€™t want to remember how that night went; when youโ€™re truly helpless, you rarely cry much.

I knew what a woman showering at a single manโ€™s place implied. I didnโ€™t want to imagine what had happened between them or how, but those images invaded my head anyway. By the time I realized, my own nails had dug into my palm until it was purple.

Staring at the ringed nail marks, I felt unbearably sad.

After that I decided to let go. I even planned to leave the city.

Then, a couple days later, Ethan had the accident.

When he woke, it was already night. I rubbed my sore arm and asked, groggy, โ€œWhereโ€™s Chloe?โ€ Ethan, terse, โ€œShe left.โ€

I wondered if theyโ€™d fought. He closed his laptop, rubbed his forehead. โ€œBring me the chamber pot under the bed.โ€ I blinked. โ€œOhโ€ฆokay.โ€ He lifted the covers and I saw the blue-and-white striped hospital pajamas.

I couldnโ€™t look. โ€œDo you want me to look away?โ€ He half-smiled.

โ€œSuit yourself.โ€

3. I was staying overnight to keep watch, so I kept glancing toward Ethan to see if he was planning to sleep.

Around eleven he finally shut his computer. โ€œBring a hot towel. I want to wipe up.โ€ โ€œWipe up?โ€ Well, he hadnโ€™t showered since the crashโ€”a good three days.

I brought the towel. Ethan was unbuttoning his shirt.

As he pulled it off, his chest and abs appearedโ€”lean but not scrawny, muscles smooth and defined.

If it had been before, my face would have flushed and Iโ€™d be too embarrassed to look.

Who among us isnโ€™t a little bit lecherous with the one we like?

He took the towel and wiped his neck and arms.

His chest rose and fell with each breath.

I found myself distracted.

After a while he handed the towel to me. โ€œGo wash it.โ€ โ€œOkay.โ€ I went like a dutiful little wife.

I rinsed the towel, but he didnโ€™t take it back. โ€œYour back.โ€ I understood and carefully wiped his back.

His skin under my hands was smooth and resilientโ€”different from a womanโ€™s softer skin.

Ethan didnโ€™t speak until I reached his waist, when he suddenly pressed my hand down.

โ€œDone?โ€ I asked.

He glanced at me without showing much.

โ€œDo I need to wipe belowโ€”too?โ€

I froze after asking.

Ethan stiffened too, lowering his eyes with a complex look.

Oh no.

I regretted it. How could I have flirted with a man who might have a girlfriend? He would surely misunderstand.

โ€œMaybe we should get a nurse?โ€ I suggested after finishing, trying to be earnest.

Ethan frowned. โ€œDo you think Iโ€™m a nuisance?โ€ โ€œOr next time wait until Chloeโ€™s here?โ€ I said. โ€œAfter all, sheโ€™s your girlfriend.โ€ Ethan replied, โ€œSheโ€™s not my girlfriend.โ€ Theyโ€™d slept together and she wasnโ€™t his girlfriend?

Ethan, when did you get so awful?

4.
I told Maya about the night I accidentally walked in on Chloe showering at Ethanโ€™s house.

She ground her teeth. โ€œAt this point youโ€™re not still head-over-heels for him, are you?โ€ I rubbed my face. โ€œI was over it. I was actually planning to leave and go back to Riverside.

But didnโ€™t Ethan get into a car accident?

My mom asked me to stay and take care of him for a while.โ€

โ€œWait, I think my brother works in Arbor City. Let me ask.โ€ Maya said magnanimously. โ€œIโ€™ll introduce him to you! Heโ€™s really handsome.โ€ โ€œWhen did you get a brother?โ€ โ€œCousinโ€”older cousin. Iโ€™ll have him add you on WeChat.โ€ A few minutes later, someone named JL sent a friend request.

We added him and didnโ€™t say anything.

He probably wasnโ€™t interested in me, just didnโ€™t want to be rude.

I didnโ€™t care much and forgot about it.

It took about a weekโ€”after X-rays confirmed his fracture hadnโ€™t shiftedโ€”before Ethan could be discharged.

During that time, Chloe came to visit him every day.

She brought fruit, mealsโ€”saved me a lot of trouble.

Ethan was polite to her. In fact he was polite to everyone, except with me he never put on a pretense.

Chloe asked me, concerned, if I needed to go home and rest, that she could stay and watch over him.

โ€œReally?โ€ I hadnโ€™t been sleeping well in the hospitalโ€”Ethan sometimes had to get up at night, sometimes needed water. I woke at least twice every night.

She smiled sweetly. โ€œOf course.โ€ From the bed Ethan glanced over at us, his look heavy.

I picked up my bag. โ€œIโ€™ll come back tonight.โ€ As I left, I saw Ethan press his lips togetherโ€”his sign he was mad.

In freshman year heโ€™d had a bad fluโ€”high fever that wouldnโ€™t breakโ€”and refused to go to the hospital. I couldnโ€™t carry him, so I stayed up all night in our rented room, doing everything I could to cool him down, my eyes burning from lack of sleep.

Two students alone in a new town, with nowhere to turn. That night I felt helpless.

Luckily the fever broke the next day and he came to, opening his eyes and looking at me without a word.

I had held in my tears all night and finally let them fall. I stammered, asking if he was hungry, what he wanted to eat.

It was flu season. Ethan asked if I wasnโ€™t afraid of getting sick.

I, being hopelessly romantic, said, โ€œIโ€™d rather it be me who gets sick.โ€ Ethan was silent.

If it had been back then, I wouldnโ€™t have trusted Ethanโ€”fresh from an accidentโ€”to another woman.

โ€ฆ โ€œCareful.โ€ Lost in the memory, I almost walked into someone in the hospital corridor. A manโ€™s index finger tapped my forehead, stopping me before I bumped into him. His tone held no blame.

I looked up, a little stunned. It was a very young doctor, tallโ€”at least a head taller than meโ€”in a white coat, with especially sharp brows and a sculpted nose.

He smiled at me, glanced at the room behind me, then walked past.

A thought crossed my mind.

So other guys can be that handsome too.

5.
That night, on the bus to the hospital, Maya texted me: Her โ€œbrotherโ€ had stopped by to see me, thought I was cute.

Me: ???

When?

Maya: Heโ€™ll tell you himself. He said I couldnโ€™t say.

So I went into Ethanโ€™s room full of questions.

A man sat on the edge of the bed, a bandage across his forehead. He beamed when he saw me. โ€œClaireโ€™s here.โ€ Ethan said. โ€œThis is Chloeโ€™s brother, Lucas.โ€ โ€œHaha, you might not know me yet, but Iโ€™ve known about you for a while.โ€ Lucas stood and greeted me.
